Hey! You Can't Wear That!

Michael Jeffries' view on who should wear Abercrombie and Fitch's clothing is completely wrong. Ellen Degeneres said on her show "beauty doesn't come between the sizes of 0 and 8". And she is completely right. Jeffries is telling teenagers that beauty is only for thin people, the plus sized women and girls aren't beautiful at all. This is making teens more self-conscience then how they already are. He says "We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong (in our clothes), and they can't belong".


It is completely unfair to target a particular group of teenagers. The "plus-sized" ones (if you can even call them that, in my opinion a size 10 isn't plus sized at all) are already made fun of at school, and are self-conscience because they are as dangerously thin as other girls their age. They don't need another source telling them they aren't beautiful (even though they are) and excluded. When Michael Jeffries said that over-weight teens don't belong in their brand, he probably made many people feel worthless.


This contributes to the already biased perception of what beauty is because it makes people second guess how they are perceived and perception isn't reality. In this article (Stop telling teens they aren't beautiful; make clothes for teens of all sizes!), Benjamin O'Keefe said that he felt worthless whenever he looked through magazines that only had smaller sizes then him. And that teens need to realize they are not worthless. Everyone is beautiful in their own way, that should be the message toward the public.
